Bicycle Day celebrates the first time LSD was taken willingly on April 19, 1943, an event that resulted in a curious bicycle ride.
Some years back I started a habit of writing a poem to LSD each April. The re-entry stage after writing turns out to be an easier thing than integrating an actual trip while maintaining a job and supporting a family. My intention (every psychonaut knows the value of setting an intention) was not just to free associate some trippy word salad but to craft something that works as both page poetry and an invocation. You be the judge.
Below is my first attempt. I'll dust off others is there is interest.
A glass dragon explodes like the Chinese New Year
Each shattered scale singing
Each shard a mirror casting sparks
Happy New Year Happy New Happy New
The bicycle wobbles in the fractured slicing rain
Glass is blasted sand
Bathe in it, the cuts will heal;
Slivers assault the eye, bat your lashes;
Let them fall to clatter in the spokes
Pedal through spun streamers
Catch a facet that reflects the thumbed tinkle of the bell
Press it to your belt, your heart, your throat, your brow
Release the brakes and slip the chain
Launch somersault over chrome
bars to catch the falling broken wing
Obsidian children of the dragon’s flame
Take your place in the blood mosaic
Imagine the first trip taken by Alfred Hoffman having these unexplained occurrences, how could one explain it scientifically, how could one fully grasp and comprehend what was occurring around them. Bicycle day has lead to tremendous research both positive and negative (I am looking forward to the results of consciousness studies which are going to be done soon , however cringe at the thought of those involved in MK ultra and other similar programs around the world.)
