Cake

Small
white
royally iced
birthday cake
with a baby blue
satin ribbon
waiting patiently
in the kitchen
for the one.

A while later it’s
a mass of black
writhing ants
helpless and exposed
its purity besmirched
like a maiden pinned
under a cold-blooded horde.

I launch a heroic attack
tea towel slapping
scattering
I dive under the sink
armoury for chemical warfare
squirting
spraying
anything
everything!

Called a liar
by a middle-aged
craggy
alcoholic housemate
and a cake
marble cool
like a young southern belle
statuesque under a parasol.

I shrugged
huffed and walked away
thinking
eat your scabby cake
you scanky cow.
