"A Childlike Christmas" ~ A Pantoum

in poetry •  6 years ago

"Whatever else be lost among the years, Let us keep Christmas still a shining thing: Whatever doubts assail us, or what fears, Let us hold close one day, remembering Its poignant meaning for the hearts of men. Let us get back our childlike faith again."
- Grace Noll Crowell -

A new poetry form?

It is certainly new to me.

While reading about different formal styles of poetry, I discovered a form that I have never before tried: the Pantoum. I hope you find it's rhythm and pattern as fascinating as I have.

~A Childlike Christmas~

A Pantoum by Duncan Cary Palmer

To know the joy of Christmas,
You must become a child
With shining eyes, and fearless:
Your heart held open wide.

You must become a child,
Accepting all you see,
Your heart held open wide,
Your mind, sarcasm free.

Accept, then, what you see:
Leave bitterness behind.
Your mind, sarcasm free,
Rejoice in what you find.

Leave bitterness behind,
And know the joy of Christmas.
Rejoice in what you find,
With eyes, shining and fearless.

I am sure @quillfire has heard of it, but I am totally ignorant of all things poetry and prose... However I can still enjoy it :) Well done.

@old-guy-photos,

Hey Ol' Guy.

I clicked your hyperlinked explanation for a 'Pantoum.' I knew it was a French form but was unaware of its Malaysian origins. You learn something every day.

There are so many 'poetic forms' that it's hard to keep track. Personally, I've never found that the 'repeating lines' of certain forms to be all that useful of a device. Indeed, it often 'breaks up the flow' of a poem. This technique tends to be more useful when writing song lyrics where line repetition is more frequently utilized (think choruses) because the objective is not necessarily to 'tell a story' or 'make an argument' but rather to 'elicit an emotion.'

Good poem though ... and timely.

BTW, I'm still waiting for a few more poems out of you. 2019 ... the year Ol' Guy became Shakespeare.

Quill

It may well be nearly 2019,
Yet I feel scarcely a poem will be seen...
LOLZ

@old-guy-photos,

We can do this the easy way or the hard way. :-)

Quill

Thanks!

How are your moving plans progressing? Have you escaped the cold yet?

Yes in fact every day brings me closer. There is a seemingly convoluted master plan in the works lol. It is a process, no doubt!

Good luck!

Profound and oh-so-true. I find this type of poetry very easy to pass along as people seem to like the rhythm of them.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas.

Thank you, Denise!

I was really happy to discover this form, and even more pleased that it seemed to flow so well...

I wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas as well! Thanks for coming by! :)

😄😇😄

@creatr

The pleasure is all mine!

I agree with @quillfire re the form but I think it's also a matter of taste. I eschew all set forms but I think this poem is one of your best, so if it works for you, go for it. Well done, my friend :)

Thanks, John...

This one just sort of flowed forth from the idea and was helped along by experimenting with this repetitive form... :) And I took a bit of liberty with the form, as I am at times wont to do... ;)

@creatr,

Please do not mistake my remarks as criticism ... it is a very fine poem. @old-guy-photos and I are old friends and I've been nagging and cajoling him into writing poetry for a long time. And so, whenever he shows even a modicum of interest (which is not bloody often), I try to be as engaging as possible. :-)

Your Pantoum certainly creates an interesting effect: Patterns within patterns ... and pattern triggers the secretion of dopamine (the neurotransmitter responsible for creating focus, holding attention, formation of long term memory and the sensation of 'wanting'). Powerful mojo.

You must become a child,
Accepting all you see,
Your heart held open wide,
Your mind, sarcasm free.

I found this stanza particularly well written. The short meter moves things along quickly, force-multiplying the 'imperative' and 'declarative' nature of words.

Well done.

BTW, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Quill

Greetings, @quillfire,

Very nice to "meet" you here today! :)

"Please do not mistake my remarks as criticism..."

No worries my friend, my default tendency is to take everything in the best light until and unless proven otherwise.

Now that I know of your quest, I will drop Paul a hint every now and then if I remember. ;)

Thank you very much for your feedback on my poem! I really appreciate your encouragement. Do you happen to know @moeknows? Another Steemian poet.

I love writing poetry when the muse strikes, and it has done so much more often since I joined Steemit a couple years ago. If you haven't already seen it, I invite you to browse the Poetry shelf of my Steemit Library, which you can find via the link at the top of my blog (or linked from almost any image in my posts).

Quill, thanks so much for coming by, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well. I hope to "see you around." ;)

@creatr,

Do you happen to know @moeknows? Another Steemian poet.

I do not but I will swing by and check him out.

If you haven't already seen it, I invite you to browse the Poetry shelf of my Steemit Library ...

I've heard about the Steemit Library but never looked into it. I guess it's time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too ... we'll see you on the other side.

Quill

Christmas was definitely more magical when we were children, believing in Santa was fun, finding out there was no Santa was the worst news ever :(

Thanks, Karen.

Merry Christmas!
