A Poem for My Boy

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

            I
My heart is yours

Tho I do not know how
You are my world
And yet, I did not see the change

My child, because of you

My heart beat is different
Because of you, child
My purpose is fully known

Future visions of you are faded

The stuff of story and legend now come
The blessing you are to me is unsearchable
Indescribable, but for you I will go on

            II
A journey is only as good

as the company you keep
And when two great travelers join their paths
The result is sure to be most unique

The tale you’ve begun that lies before

That here sparkles at our feet
You my child, my love, my joy
You’ve given us the key

To western lands we’ll travel on

Always following the son
Each night we’ll rest, fulfilled and happy
Yet our journey has only begun
Through toil and pain, this happy troupe
We will chase after joy
In the end, my child, our games and learning
Will guide you on paths of your own.

            III
Go now boy, and wander on

Our love will never leave
Through all this world could muster up
You’ve made our hearts to sing

If you should ever wonder

If our joy in you has gone
Remember the Son and do go on
In the love that Heaven’s brought

Seasons are for planting fields

And seasons are for reaping
But sun and moon remain above
In waking and in sleeping

And so our love when near or far

Goes on for you still burning
My child, you have made a home
For these two hearts when journey’s done
