A thought

in poetry •  7 years ago

A thought flits silently on the edge of recognition
The closing of the eyes
The barking of a dog
Just as I begin to think that a thought is mine
Off it floats

Does it belong to another now?

Like some long lost lover
I loved that thought
Or I would have if I had gotten to know it

And the one before doesn't return

And the ones that follow are treacherous
Reminding me of what I've lost
Although, I never truly had it.

If it returns will I recognize it?

Will I know that I've been given a new chance?
Or will I take it and abuse it like all the rest?
Is this a thought I've nearly thought?
Or did the memories of those thoughts send me this one?
End
