Vital signs on a steady decline
Breathing falling below the line
Blood flow ceasing to climb
Still, the thumps were set in a rhyme.

One thump, two,and another,steady
Unlike his weakened body, they stood out, heavy They testified of a hard-set wilfulness. heady They spoke of determination, sure, ever ready

The deadening fever lingered on, threatening Companions and family began fretting
Enemies attempted amends, regretting
And the heartbeat was undaunted, certain

Week after endless week. he was lain
Tube after tube, dwelling in his veins
Unstable, medications addled his brain
Yet his heartbeat resounded through the pain

Then the Vitals began getting stronger
And the heart led the body to recover
And left us one upon which to ponder
That a determined heart, all will conquer.
