Every day there something to celebrate. Today I’m celebrating the Slinky on National Slinky Day! The Slinky’s is a classic toy. It wasn’t originally designed to be a toy, it was designed to help stabilize equipment on ships. The Navy wasn’t interested, but thankfully the inventor’s wife saw possibilities. And since the mid-1940s children have been awed by the Slinky’s ability to walk.

I fondly recall the first day of spring my senior high school. The physics teacher started the class by saying spring has sprung. Today will be studying the Slinky. It is this memory that is inspired my poem today.

HOW A SLINKY WALKS

The slinky is a simple toy,
that brought me lots of joy.

The slinky is a helical spring,
it can be used for many things.

But many enjoy,
it as a toy.

The spring is pre-compressed,
so, It’s cylindrical when at rest.

I’ll explain how it walks,
with minimal science talk.

The slinky very cleverly,
stores potential energy.

Momentum and gravity,
are the key.

As it starts down the stairs,
the force of gravity appears.

The stored energy is released,
and momentum is unleashed.

The slinky travels coil by coil,
and doesn’t require oil.

It continues to flip head over tail,
until the force of gravity curtails.

That’s enough science talk,
go take your slinky for a walk.

Video has a Slinky commercial and shows how it is made. Some of the machinery in the Slinky plant are trade secrets and could not be shown.

I opened this post just so I could hear the Slinky song! And you didn't disappoint. You even added in a documentary!
300 million produced since 1945? Wow!

Thank you. Gotta love the slinky song. The slinky in the post is the one I keep on my desk. Playing with it helps me think.
