Poetry Challenge: Week 1 (Abecedarian)

in poetry •  8 years ago

Though fiction is my first love, I like to practice flexing my poetic muscles now and then. It can be hard, as someone who writes primarily prose, to know how best to express my thoughts as poems. To that end I like to try out different forms for inspiration. I figure posting one here a week will help me stick to my resolution of practicing writing poetry.

So here's Week 1: the abecedarian poem!

The internet says it's "an ancient poetic form guided by alphabetical order. Generally each line or stanza begins with the first letter of the alphabet and is followed by the successive letter, until the final letter is reached." You may know the form from its use in children's games or from its derivative, the acrostic.

For mine I decided to take inspiration from one of my favorite fictional worlds, Wonderland. Here it is -- and please comment with your own!

LETTER TO WONDERLAND

Alice,
Bear with me.
Carroll wrote of your fall
down the rabbit hole as
either fever-dream or fantasy.
Fact is, they say,
girls are prone to imagination.
Hello—I am a girl, and
I am prone to imagination.
Just what the two have in common
keeps itself a secret from me.
Lately I’ve been seeing a white rabbit in the
margins of my vision.
No roses or cat grins yet,
or I would have written far sooner.
Pray tell—how did you do it?
Question the world without questioning yourself?
Roses might be welcome now, red or otherwise,
serving as a distraction from
the feeling of falling down, endlessly.
Unless you know what to do,
very truthfully, I fear I might be lost.
Wonderland seems like a dream now, a
Xanadu, a palace wrought of words and hopes.
You know better than anyone: there are
zillions of ways to be mad.
