I hiked 300kms. An Ode To One Epic Hike.

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

I hiked three hundred kilometres,
On an epic quest.
Determined somehow that I'd shift,
This demon off my chest.

Head strong, hell bent, with fury,
Sights set upon that track.
Not once did I give credence,
To the monkey on my back.

Long ago inked to my soul,
I'll wear it all my days.
One foot forward then the next,
Bamboozled by the maze.

When weary Dewey Cox would play,
Again I would Walk hard.
Blocking nerve receptors,
As stress fractures shot like shards.

When Dewey's voice was fading,
And I started to slip under.
Kimya came to rescue me,
Get up and Walk Like Thunder.

On I walked and then I crawled,
Drawing strength from love.
I stumbled, then Black Flag rolled round,
And Henry's bellow Rise Above.

I did and broken I hiked on,
To give the innocent a voice.
I shouted I CANNOT!
When told that stopping was a choice.

The people that I walked for,
Not afforded rest or freedom.
The pain I feel as I hike on,
Compared to them I am in Eden.

Then from Franti and The Spearheads,
Again I'll find my fill.
Keep on walking, Keep on talking,
My answer Yes I will.

I thought you broke my heart,
Until I gave it to another.
I hiked for him, he fixed it,
And now he calls me brother.

As I turned towards the finish,
Dylan lamented, It's alright Ma.
I'm only bleeding, only crying,
It wasn't all that far.

The doctors they all say,
I should have never hiked so long.
But I'd do it all again,
If my brothers sang my song.

Resting afoot this hill,
With my monkey I have stopped.
Not defeated, quietly scheming,
Of the view from up the top.

Up on my back dear monkey,
Together we'll get there.
Climb down my friend and take my hand,
Your burdens mine to share.

This is my entry for the Ode Challenge.

It's based on the run I did a year ago, and some of the music that got me through.

This is the post I made at the time.

Wow!!! Your word create is great and the stuff put together make your post so engaging.

OMG just flipping brilliant!!!!! And the shaved hair I love too! As for the monkey... I've never had a tattoo, but a few weeks ago I asked my friend to tattoo a Raven on the sole of my foot and he said, it should be on my Achilles heel... funny how these creatures decide where they need to be for us. However, then an old hippie told me I needed to ditch the Raven, but ah! where is the romance in that? xxxx beautifully sculptured poem xxxx

Raven! is my creature too. Definitely want one. You have freaked me out a little bit, because I wanted it on the sole of my foot too. They said no, like I was a weirdo. The tops of my feet are covered already. Apparently it would wear off too.

Haha that's hilarious! A tattoo artist thought you a weirdo for wanting a tattoo. Haha. Ah maybe it affects the nerves?? My mate just has the gear and he's an artist :) yes they wear off. I kind of liked that idea. Like maybe by the time it's gone the raven will no longer bug me. I wrote a novel when i was very sick and immobilised. Raven started as a character from there but my relationship with him changed after the mother of all betrayals from my then muse. If that makes sense haha. so weird tho! How many other people out there want a raven on the sole of their foot? We should do it together :) girls unite, me in your mirror to get ourselves some wings :)

I walked pretty much all the way from Rome to Popoli two years ago, somewhere close to 300km (I ended up doing a loop around the ring around Avezzano, as well, via Celano). I highly recommend doing such a thing. It's good for the soul... doing it for charity is even cooler.
