A few minutes walk away
lives a dog with no name.
Ever since its birth,
it has always been the same.
"Doggy! Puppy!" tongue-click noises
is all it has got in the name of a name.

There is no "Home Sweet Home."
Streets is where he has grown.
For his every bark and every groan,
he gets sharp objects and stones thrown.
Lives off of leftovers and wastes unknown.
It's a feast for him if he gets hold of a bone.

Always been hit with sticks and shouted upon,
Never really knew the meaning of a comfort zone.
Never really knew what home, love and care meant,
Survival was the only thing on his Maslow's Pyramid.

Never been treated with love, fear became his nature,
Scared dog with his tail down, the impact was major.
Scared of having the food stolen by other scavengers,
Ate whatever amount it could, before he sensed danger.

Ticks stuck on the body, no one to give a wash
gets sick with diseases, no one to give a _ _ _ _
No fresh or stale water to quench its thirst,
Wants to ask for water, wants to be heard.
But scared of getting hit,
doesn't even squeak when it hurts.

It's scared of every moving object, barely sleeps.
The most vigilant one on the bustling streets.
Not one kid or a passerby says hello, no Ni Hao!
Fear so deeply injected, it's sacred of a "Meow!"

So the next time you see a street dog,
Know that it could be your best friend.
Don't look at it with disdain,
know that it's been in pain
with no place to shelter in rain.
Eats food everyday with no plate,
recall this the next time you complain.

Very nice poetry..

In past few day, I have read a news.. It happened where I live.. I hate Pakistan.. I hate being Pakistani.. Pakistan has no care for animals as well as human beings..

Check this out:::::; ‘Cruelty’: People outraged as Karachi authorities poison at least 700 stray dogs Click here

That's very cruel. I wonder why the notion of "If something doesn't seem right, killing should fix it" seems to be prevalent there. I guess things would improve for people as well as for animals when there's some sort of political stability in the country.
AFAIK, the political situation of Pakistan is not in the best possible state.

This is really heartbreaking.

Thanks a lot for writing this beautiful poem @isteemit. That picutre up there and the whole poem captures the condition of the stray dogs out there perfectly and it's really sad to see them like that. I got one stray dog near my home, he's called Khaire (Brownie) and I give him treats whenever he is around. And, there was a dog lying stiff dead on the way to work today, it didn't look like it was hit by a vehicle, it might have eaten something bad. Poor dog.

That's so sad. Dogs deserve to be treated better. It's great that you give treats to Khaire, I'm sure it gets excited whenever it sees you around.
Thank you for the topic. It feels good to know that I did justice to the topic given. Thanks a lot for the support :D

Yeah, it's become a habit now to see if he's around when I return home in the evening. He doesn't make much noise and he has startled me a couple of times by coming silently from behind and nudging his nose into my hand. He is a good dog.

Khairey - The good dog :D

Nice poem! I'm following you now :)
