A Villanelle
The highly structured villanelle is a nineteen-line poem with two repeating rhymes and two refrains. The form is made up of five tercets followed by a quatrain. The first and third lines of the opening tercet are repeated alternately in the last lines of the succeeding stanzas; then in the final stanza, the refrain serves as the poem's two concluding lines. Using capitals for the refrains and lowercase letters for the rhymes, the form could be expressed as: A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2. Source: Wikipedia
Tears Raining on the Waves
I stand desolate on the shore
Life so empty without you near
My tears raining on the waves
My heart cannot be consoled
Beloved voice I cannot hear
I stand desolate on the shore
All my love the seas enfold
Her summons my worst fear
My tears raining on the waves
Our lives had once been bold
Now my barren future clear
I stand desolate on the shore
I’ll come here till I grow old
To the place I lost you, dear
My tears raining on the waves
Where your watery grave is cold
And at this same time every year
I stand desolate on the shore
My tears raining on the waves

I had never heard of this style. But, I must have skimmed this post yesterday because I had a dream last night and villanelle was part of it. How tricky the mind is. This is beautiful. I shed a few tears thinking on it.

Isn't that interesting - something must have stuck in your mind without you even realizing it, and it triggered your dream. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this poem; it's one of my favourites. Such a challenge to write, but it was so worth it in the end. Thank you!
