I Want You to Know

I want you to know.
It may be pessimism,
Or realism — whatever that means –
But I want you to know that human beings don’t want to be free,
They want to be comfortable.

I want you to know that we strive for joy,
But flail in darkness –
So few who can see vaguely,
And less still can see beyond themselves,
Into the light of Mind and Heart,
Into what is often called God.

I want you to know,
That the sad words scrawled on some wall,
Somewhere, somewhen,
Cry out across the centuries in a terrifying silence.

I want you to know,
The dreams left behind,
The misery and love in the shallow backwaters of evening’s soul…
All these come to me and leave me,
Fill me and empty me,
Pulling strings that I myself should be pulling,
For I know not the way.

I want you to know,
The time when I saw It,
The time when I laughed It,
The time when I breathed It.
And you were there too,
The Unknown, the Unceasing,
The Beginning and End of all things………

But human beings don’t want to be free,
They want to be comfortable.
Hence freedom is a tool.

Yet there are those who mature,
So far and few in a land of lost wonder.
I want you to know,
I want you to know…

I want you to know this life can be free and beautiful.
I want you to know that the paramount of human experience isn’t in comfort, but in suffering and joy.
I want you to know that beyond the pale of jester’s toil there lives a greater possibility.
I want you to know the voice of the wind, and of a lost soul,
That there is hope in the darkest of times,
For nowhere else can it be found,
And there are tidings of forgiveness waiting on the other shore,
Where you’ve been the whole time.

I want you to know — and I want to know –
What it means to let it all go.
And the soul that I don’t have.
