Survivors

I love walking
In the fall
With you.

I obsess over hunter's moons
The rustling
And scraping of pain—

First, dry leaves on the walk
And then later,
Your whisper in my brain.

We walk a rocky strand
Waves rolling,
In skittering dark—

Summer ebbing and although
We’re broken—
We haven’t yet fallen apart.

We’re survivors;

Love hasn’t killed us
But heals us
And makes us strong.

There are places in my mind
Grief collects
But somehow we struggle on.

And you,
Backlit by the sullen sun
You’re lovely and still fair;

The sunlight gently gilds
Your face and stray strands
Of your hair.
