We have our instruments
To scan the vast void,
The empty desert
Of bright stars
Arid and lifeless.

Eons back
We heard a voice
Speaking in our head;

A dry whisper
Of a radio
In an empty house.

We heard words
But didn’t recognize
Them as ours.

And so too with this weeping—
Crying out to the night
For companionship

Scanning the nebulae
And constellations
For a distant civilization...

We would embrace the alien
Their footprints in cosmic dust
And not recognize them as us.
