The Stars Above Us

It is the stars,
The stars above us, govern our conditions.

(Lear 4.3. 33)

Summer stars rise
Above the house,
The same stars
As when we began;

I once thought them friendly
But now
I’m not sure,

They’re changeless,
Never grow old,
Or so it seems to us.

Perfectly solitary
In the turning night,
As ancient as their light

Shakespeare saw
The same night sky
And it brought to his mind

Cruel Fate
And its designs
On our lives.

Star crossed or blest
His heroes
Put to the test—

Like Lear, taken from his rest
Bound to a wheel
Of fire

Where his own tears
Scald
Like molten lead;

And we feel pity
And gnawing fear
Not for a man in a play

But knowing we are
Vulnerable
And it could be us any day.

Thank you!

Shakespeare did seem to place a lot of faith in the stars or fate. Perhaps it is all programmed patterning and the stars are as bound to it as any king or fickle man.

A-one writing, John:)

that's an interesting take on Fortune - communal helplessness :) Thanks Pryde

I did not mean to imply helplessness. Certainly there is help:)

But knowing we are
Vulnerable
And it could be us any day.

What a gentle and true reminder that we are but a breath.

so true...and the reason for tragedy to show the fall of princes but also to show it could happen to us

Amen

As always my friend, beautifully written and composed.

Those last two stanzas cut straight to the heart of the matter. Vulnerability on two counts - physically, in the vastness of the cosmos, and emotionally, in personal relationships. Another expressive piece, and well turned with regards to the rhythm!
