Wishing

I found a fountain gushing with promise.
They gazed at its ripples with feverish lips
Lapping for knowledge unknown to the tongue,
Tasting loose limits with each wanting sip.
Naivety spills forth – forgotten.

Angels carved from cobblestone; their
Eyes, gazing down at gulping throats
Thirsty for philosophy,
Starving to hide their humanity with coats
Of provocative paint.

Tossing their shillings and tithes
To their idols, praying for luck
Lacking from their arid lives.
With every coin to the bottom, sunk,
Drowning in lies.

If only they looked above, as below,
Repented their wrongs and mindless malice.
Turn to Him and be humble-
Forget the fountain, its angelic schist,
And choose Christ.
