Here is a poem I find very touching.
I like to recite it when I'm sad.
It makes me feel better, it comforts me.
I thought I would share it with you guys, along with giving a modern-English version and a little explanation of its essence, to me, anyway...
Shakespeare Sonnet 10
For shame deny that thou bear'st love to any,
Who for thyself art so unprovident.
Grant, if thou wilt, thou art beloved of many,
But that thou none lovest is most evident;
For thou art so possess'd with murderous hate
That 'gainst thyself thou stick'st not to conspire.
Seeking that beauteous roof to ruinate
Which to repair should be thy chief desire.
O, change thy thought, that I may change my mind!
Shall hate be fairer lodged than gentle love?
Be, as thy presence is, gracious and kind,
Or to thyself at least kind-hearted prove:
Make thee another self, for love of me,
That beauty still may live in thine or thee.
Modern English-
Be ashamed you love no one!
Your don't even care for yourself.
You're loved by many
Whilst you don't have any feelings towards other person.
A great deal of hate lies in your heart.
This hate corrupts you as well.
Its purpose is to destroy the house you so desire to build
Change yourself, and I may change my mind about you
Would you like to kip in a place of hatred for your whole life, rather than a place of love and warmth?
Be kind to other creatures,
If that't to much to ask, at least be kind to yourself.
Leave a copy of yourself in this world
In which your beauty will remain.
Analysis
This poem starts, introducing a character in a rather sad and miserable way.
This character holds no love to others, let alone to itself. What a poor thing for one, to not love, even himself/herself.
This character isn't scolded by society, it's loved by it! However, it has a difficulty showing its feeling towards other people.
A great hatred has been creeping inside this character's heart, growing over time maybe. As it grows, it corrupts our poor character from within. This is the dangerous thing about hatred, it's most poisonous...
The poem ends in a sincere appeal to the writer, to start using its heart for loving others, and not less important, if not more, to start love itself.
There is also an advice for the our character to have a child, so its lovely beauty will remain for others to behold.
Your explanations was clear and concise. Shakespeare remains a ground breaker in this endeavor. Thanks to you for sharing
