Left Out In The Cold…

They say being different
makes you unique
those subtle idiosyncrasies
just add to your mystique

but the chill of isolation
has altered your life
being kicked when your down
as they twist the knife

rejected by your peers
shunned and avoided
snubbed by the ones
who walk around anointed

being deemed an outsider
so easily discarded
even when your included
it's always halfhearted

your need for human contact
is no different from the rest
yet each and everyday
it continues unaddressed

like a hunger or thirst
we need it to survive
the touch of another
that makes us feel alive

alone with your thoughts
night after night
tormented by the laughter
just out of your sight

some trait or eccentricity
peculiar in some way
should not confine you
to another lonely day

the prom you never saw
that dance you went without
leave tiny little scars
no one could discount

heart broken daily
sadness your best friend
depression and loneliness
inevitably descend

it fucks with your head
being alone all the time
eventually you just accept it
with no reason or rhyme

some day it will pass is a
bill of goods you've been sold
then why do you still feel --
left out in the cold...
