Poetry Slam Challenge #2: Hydra

in poetry •  8 years ago

Handing over my cards

My purse

Relief lifting my

head

We are gathered, equal

Sun slanting through windows

Smiles on

faces

Free of weight we sing

Holding hands

Circle of new

friends

Exultant, we listen to speeches

Yes, yes.

To be free of such

things

Cards, consumerism.. Bills

No threats, red ink.

Fellowship and new found

belief

Gladdened hearts, taking up our new roles.

Working the land

Sun kissed earth and

skin

Self sufficient, truly tasting

As if at first

The fruits of our

labours

Of course they try to break it

Their bullhorns and uniforms

The cult decrying

cults

They take.

And we are lessened

We, the devout

endure

The hydra grew new heads

And unbidden

So do we

grow

Sun slanting through windows

Uncertain smiles

I promise them.

freedom

They hand over their cards

Wallets, purses

And begin

afresh

Relief brings tears of joy

Lives returned as promised

We sing, holding

hands
