Every year since Mimmi passed, I try to create a poem on her birthday.

You were the laughter
In your sons eyes.

You were the tears
Cried.

You were the two a.m
Best friend
Call
When my heart
Felt like it had been
Torn in two.

I was your California
Sissy,
You always called me
Chickadee.
And I was the
Shoulder
You cried on
Literally.

You were peach ice-cream
And boiled peanut
Memories.

Honestly at times
I felt like a
Complete idiot
I was unlatched trunks
Runaway wheelchairs
Thank God nobody got hurt
Now looking back
I can laugh
Memories.

You were
Never take
Life for granted
Live each day
Like it may be
Your last.

You were
People stare
I don't care
I'll tell them
Wild stories.

I was holding back
Laughter,
As you
Stood their
Straight faced
Telling them
The reason you
We're an amputee
Was a lion
Attacked you
In the zoo.

I was holding back
Laughter until we walked
Away,
And then soon
I could hold it
No more
Laughing until
I cried.

I was your
Pizza dipped into
Ranch.
It's a California
Thing
Sissy.

You were
Banana and Mayo
Sandwiches.
I was yuck
I love you girlie
But I'm not eating
That.

I was the letter
You wrote
Telling me
It was all catching up
To you,
I'm clinically
Depressed,
I'm sorry if
I haven't been the
Best friend I could be.

I was
Don't be silly girl
You've been nothing
But the best friend
To me,
Call me,
Write me,
Email me
Anytime you
Need me.

I was the poetry
You were the prose.
