If only I didn’t have this curse
of caffeine & nicotine in the morning
poetry & poison at night
perhaps I wouldn’t have to pry
through the beloved’s being
I would burst with better
No more the cannibal
that eats my own heart

The words may linger in the throat
only to evaporate by the time they reach their journey’s end
at the tip of the tongue
You, shadow in my dreams, I cannot remember to relay
Just the cloudburst of nostalgia
raining from the speakers
As they play the soundtrack to my reverie

Twenty minutes into waking
and
I’ve forgotten all but the flavor of my dreams
