"So, You Are The Man" (poem) >>> (100 Days of Poetry Contest ... Day #6)

in poetry •  7 years ago

I am the father of a good-looking teenage daughter.

Enough said.

Other Business

As those of you who follow me may know, several days ago I wrote a poem, and published a post, promoting an upcoming documentary, War-Torn, about a Vietnam Vet suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The documentary was made by a fellow Steemian, @derangedvisions, an Iraq Vet who himself suffers from the affliction.

The documentary was meant to encourage other veterans to seek help, thereby reducing an astonishing statistic: Every day, 22 veterans commit suicide.

The documentary premiered this past Saturday on @derangedvisions feed (see here) and has had tremendous success. There have been many comments from people sharing their own experiences and those of loved ones. Not everyone, however, thought this noble endeavor was worthy of praise:

FUCK THAT SHIT WAR IS HOT FUCK US ALL IN THE AS U PUSSY EASS BITCHES

A number of people down-voted the comment. I have spoken with @derangedvisions and we have asked for the down-voters to remove their down-votes and instead spotlight the comment (upvote it to the top of the Comments section). The idea is to allow such opinion to be voiced and encourage the community to respond. As many veterans could tell you, this attitude is, unfortunately, not singular in our society.

I would ask you to visit the post and weigh in.

And should you find yourself besieged,

The walls, a breach at hand,

Against your back, a back is pressed,

Alone you will not stand.

This poem is great. It reminds me of this scene from Bad Boys 2 when the girls boyfriend comes to pick his daughter up for a date:

My daughter will be a teenager next month and is already getting boys talking to her. She laughs when she tells me about it because she already knows what they are in for when they come by the house and meet me.

@derangedvisions,

Katie and I laughed our asses off. That's called real-politics!

When I was a cop, I always told my buddies that we were going to do this when she was older.

Ive got a daughter as well!!!

@old-guy-photos,

Perhaps surprisingly, my daughter, and all her girlfriends, love it. My daughter has a t-shirt with this poem on it (different image) and loves to wear it. It's a conversation piece. Perhaps more surprisingly, the guys seem to like it too.

Human beings don't value things that are easy to obtain, and things which are valuable, are guarded. No one really expects fathers of daughters to be reasonable, so why be reasonable? The ones who seem to understand this most intuitively, are the mothers of sons.

Admittedly, I have had one negative comment: Apparently, the poem reinforces the "patriarchy." My response, "I don't care ... it also reinforces respect."

Anyway, I've seen your daughter in pictures and she seems lovely. I suspect, you and she have a relationship similar to me and mine. We're lucky guys ... and they're lucky girls. I'll drop by later today ... the poetry contest is time-consuming (but fun). I'm still trying to "organize."

What great words! I am not ready for our daughter to start dating! I am barely holding on with our son starting to date! And thank you for helping get the word out with @derangedvisions together the awareness will grow, whether good or bad, agree or disagree. The light will be shown! Have a blessed day!

@faitherz33,

I've got nothing on the dating comment! As guess as billions of other parents have survived it, we probably will too. I'm lucky though. My daughter is really mature for her age and she has high standards with respect to guys ... I almost feel sorry for the guys who've come sniffing around. I play up my lioness more than I need to ... it just feels good to roar! And, as Katie says, "Daddy, if you weren't a lion, I wouldn't be a lioness."

A well-written piece.

@prydefoltz,

Thanks Pryde.

Haha that final line is great. Set them straight!

@kingofworms,

Lesson to learn: Don't screw with the friends of poets. :-)

It's feels so worse getting through those war and you get nothing from it may God give them inner peace and keep them.

@febizle,

Febizle, thanks for dropping by.

You know, the Vets did get something for their troubles. Look at my response to that reprehensible comment on his post. I have never met @derangedvisions, and we've only known each other for a couple of weeks here on Steemit. But we were soldiers ... and that is enough. There is quality of camaraderie between brothers-at-arms that exists nowhere else in society.

You are never truly alone ... and that's what his documentary was about.

I'm not a dad but I have a beautiful daughter as well and I love this poem! :)
