Lost and Found

Original illustrated poetry by sndphoenix — about losing the best part of yourself, and finding it again.

Lost and Found

I’ve known you since the first days of our lives
Or at least, it sure feels that way
Never further apart than just down the street
Except maybe on trips once or twice

Fifteen short years we stood side by side
For every “hello,” “good morning,” “good night”
I never imagined a life without you
Till you left with that stuttered “goodbye”

I don’t even know where we went after that
How wide of a space went uncrossed
What was life like, with only half of me there
And half stuck in the love that we lost?

A decade spent planning my very best lines
“If I could meet you again, one more time…”
Funny that when the day finally came
The only words in my mind were “…Oh, hey”

Meeting you all these years later was like —
I don’t know, there’s no word to describe
Like my eyes had been missing, or shut the whole time
And when I saw you the world turned bright

What did you do in those years you were gone?
Did you think about me the same way?
Don’t answer, I’m fine just to have one more try —

And to know that love lost can be found

...Whew.

It's been a long time since I wrote any poetry, and it was tougher than I thought. Feel free to leave me a comment, whether of glowing praise or raging contempt — either is fine! I’d also be happy to hear about your own experience with love lost (or found).

Thanks for reading.
