A Highway Song

Your journey starts when day is young,
Before the sun has shown his face,
When nightly ghosts that once had clung
Now free you from their chilled embrace.

The lingering stars of yesterday
Withdraw their jealous, hidden sway.
Released, you rise as if you dream,
And set your feet to rock and stream,
Embarking while the world is gray.

Though "home behind and world ahead",
The road is now your native land,
The trees your shelter, grass your bed,
And none but you your path command.
