A TODDLER SOLD ME FLOWERS

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

Once in a humid December an

Earth rotation’s away from here

A toddler sold me flowers at

Some random Starbucks and

I cried, her midnight eyes so

Desperate and I was helpless

To do anything but buy out

Every petal clutched in her

Chubby fist and I know

Sometimes my life feels

Like an uphill boulder

Perched on my weak shoulders

But

An image of innocent desolation

On a sweaty night years ago still

Fills me with a remembered hollow

A sadness I still choke on
