As death takes your hand

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

a man lay there as death stood by
The silence peaceful and no whisper or cry
He counted all those mile markers along life's path
Thinking of the choices loves and the past
He remembered his failures and all he achieved
His wife and children twas like a beautiful dream
And as he slowly drew his last breath
That's when when he felt it the cold hand of death
He looked up into those surprisingly beautiful eyes
And as he did the veil lifted and he saw the light
He said to death why am I here
And death said listen to a story and drew him near
There was a boy broken and abused
Beaten by parents thrown out and used
But every single time the boy went through hell
His face always happy and joyful stories to tell
He helped the broken even though hurting himself
As he knew the feeling of pain and needing help
That boy became older each passing day
The suffering lingered and you know what he had to say
I cannot be perfect but I can be good
Shine a light be a symbol of not how we act but should
And so he continued along life's path
Building friendships and a love that last
He gave more than he got and that was okay
Because a servant was his duty and joy its pay
But wait said the man question upon his mind
Yes said death with a patience that transcends time
Why are you telling me this what does this mean
Then it dawned on the man this story is about me
Yes it is, was deaths cold yet warm reply
And ill tell you its moral and in my answer peace you'll find
Its not about how you die but live
Its not about how much you get but give
Its not about you at all in fact
Its about how you live love and react
Because in the end the only thing that lives on
Is how people remember you after I come and your gone
The man looked at death tears in eyes
And death said you aren't perfect but good you tried
