Solstice

This poem is inspired by the lyrics of "Northern Downpour"

SOLSTICE

Sugarcane lines the easy morning as
hints of sweet summer air
brush the hairs in our noses.
With every wince, every muffled cough
comes teary eyed splendor.
Misted murky lakes solute with salt and
the peninsula fails to protect where floodgates give,
quickly dry against the insistent wind.
Left are two pupils fixated on mine,
mine trained on yours.

Sweet utterance is echoed from fresh chords.
The vibration matches heartbeats in their release
ringing like chimes in an August breeze
they gently knock on welcoming ear drums.
Crossing through the threshold, they bear yield;
gifts of familiarity and belonging.
The gentle gust accompanies you upon entry as
ancient locks become unhinged in your presence.
Unraveled words like moths upon old scarves upon
wardrobe kept locked for harsh condition.

The wool feels foreign to bare skin.
The sun has been generous in its attendance thus far,
but even it grows exhausted holding its position
as we give day break and humble our shared abode.
Beneath the cloth in which we layer,
we reacquaint our sweaty palms.
Too long has my hand felt the inside of your thigh
through sheer veil of nylon cover.
Time comes to an abrupt stop in our embrace
and I missed your skin when you were east.

But your journey here was not made alone as
the guardian moon tails your jaunt like a strung balloon.
In its fullness we beg for it to forget to fall down,
but the lunar behemoth is destined to chase the day.
We find comfort in the equilibrium, rejoice in its nature, yet
the bittersweet seasonal shift makes its rounds.
With every conclusion brings a hopeful genesis.
We must wait the harsh winter and the unstable spring until
the solar radiance shines high and we reconvene once more.
