School

——

FLAXEN WAVES framed her face,
swept and tamed with borrowed comb.
CAMEL COAT, wrapped
and draped,
robed her shoulders.

Spotlight lighting just her chair...
A royal klieg that floods
its mark.

Chrysalis with scrubbed face, pink and
peach and
EGGSHELL bone —

Birthed and bare...

And though NO COLORS bled
from picture — knew that hers
were SHADES of GOLD.

——

The rest of them were
BLACK and WHITE —
Students,
mostly gray.

Those close
to her — RECEIVED HER LIGHT.
Pearls were in their gaze,

even, as they LOOKED AWAY,
nacre loosed from
shiny eyes.

Was in that class,
a DIFFERENT CLASS,
a different year,
a different school —

——

But SAME, the photo.

Fear... excited, OVERWHELMED,
trying not to sweat too much

— SCHOOL for acting.

——

None stood out like she
does here —

Though DEEP INSIDE
we had
her
light.

I WILL MYSELF to have
her
light.

——

A reason, still, the Stars
are GOLD.
