When I first entered the SPU I LOVED the theme you provided. You always chose something different to write about and I really really like that. That being said, I was eager when the contest was about to continue but the description was too complex, I didn't get it right away and then life happened and I totally forgot. I understood that there was a charity going on but I heard from several people that they "couldn't since they had too much voting power(?)"
But that is gone now, I do however love the fact that you focus on helping minnows that tag with the #poetsunited tag. I love that.
But! The thing that it is charity, is really great and something quite different. I believe it could be a great hit, we just need time - and consistency! We should decide on "one way to write about the contest" and stick with it week after week - or every second week could also be a good idea, it will give people time to enter, it will give the rewards time to come in, etc. But not too complex, make it easy and understandable. A theme would also be a good idea to get the creative juices flowing.
And don't give up. It will get better, and bigger, we all just need to be with you in promoting the competition, reminding people, getting that structure up and going and it will work out great - over time.
Thank you for your feedback =) I'm glad to hear you like my little personal minnow support effort ... Thank you for pointing out that the post/instructions need to be simpler too ... I also like the idea of still working with themes too... Thanks again!

As to contests in general on steemit, I have too many foolish questions so I just opt out. .. to prove just how confused I am.. charity = donation so I wondered, how much should I donate towards the pool if I wanted to participate?
( @run-the-bits thanks so much for your generosity )
participants send an amount to enter, and a small percentage goes toward a whole SBD for 3rd, 2 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd place.
As a bonus, let the winners choose the charity by secret vote. This way, all their names get mentioned so there's a level of anonymity (I think it's important when it comes to charity). The three winners profiles can be raised in the 'winning' charitable community as well.
resteems and publications on poetsunited.org of course will be cherries on the cake.
Of course, the thing is complex but contestants only need to be told 4 things to do.. 5 things, and I am lost again ;-)

Thank you for your feedback...I understand a lot of contest rules can be confusing and my writing style doesn't necessarily help (in college, my writing was too garrulous for philosophers!)
Thanks again @trumanity !

An academic and mentor once described my writing as 'flowery', so I share your pain when at times like these, one is trying to put something across in writing. In this case, it is also my thoughts that are flowery or fuzzy. I am still unclear as to whether the donations come out of thin air (from author rewards on the poem) or they are transferred from a participants wallet - I was referring to wallet transfers. (nominal amount maybe 0.1 SBD for example).
On the secret vote - my de-flowered suggestion - Poetsunited members can nominate charities beforehand to be placed on that list of potential charities standing in line to win the pool. They can be vetted as all right then added to the list. Contest winners are asked to select in order of priority, 3 of the charities they wish to have the pool donated to. The most popular one is selected to receive the takings for the contest round.
In our custom, when one makes a donation to charity, one's identity is kept secret. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't have to be as large a priority to keep it secret, as it is from a pool where everyone contributes equally. It would still be interesting to have 3 winners select by some means the charity, as it may encourage communities to work up a frenzy of participants so they can increase the chances.
If I can add one more thing as there haven't been many participants yet: maybe a lot of people don't do contests because they have the idea that the competition is too rough (I certainly feel this way!). How about this contest being completely different; the focus being on just taking part. Something like a fun run as opposed to a marathon? No strict rules; submit as many entries as you want too. Perhaps the theme can be silly as well and the selection of winning submissions based on how silly or how much in line the submission is with the theme directive.
