Lets catch some Pokemon! (中文)

  Hi! Ni Hao!   

Welcome to my first post! I’ll take you through the basics of Pokémon in Chinese! 

For those of us who grew up with it in the 90's, like me, I'm stoked play it again. So without typing too much let’s start!    

The name "Pokémon" is 口袋妖怪 (kǒu dài yāo guài) or 神奇寶貝 (shén qí bǎo bèi)depending on who you ask. The second name being older. The newer one roughly translate into pocket monster; 口袋 (kǒu dài) meaning pocket and you guessed it 妖怪 (yāo guài) means monster.   

A pokemon trainer is called a: 口袋妖怪訓練家 (xùn liàn jiā)   

So if you want to say: “I want to be a pokemon trainer.” 

                                       “wǒ yào dāng kǒu dài yāo guài xùn liàn jiā.” 

                                       “我  要    當      口  袋  妖  怪      訓   練   家.”  

       (Sentence Breakdown) 

        Me/I; wǒ”我” 

        Want; yào”要”  

        Be/become or when; dāng “當” 

        jiā here means to have that profession. “家”     

So, how about Pikachu(皮卡丘)?

The name for Pikachu is a direct transliteration from the Japanese. Pikachu皮卡丘(píkǎ qiū) 

So if you want to say: “I like Pikachu” 

                                       “wǒ xǐ huan pí kǎ qiū” 

                                       “我 喜 歡      皮卡   丘”

       Me/I; wǒ ”我”

        Like; xǐ huan ”喜歡”
