Poker & Food
When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.
Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.
Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!
Would You Eat Your Hand?
As a Lucksacks AFT segment, we will be sharing with you some simple recipes that you can whip up before your poker game. Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...
Today's Starting Hand
J10 That's right, the infamous T.J. Hooker. The hand that you are hoping for when you see a multi-way pot, so you can push all in with a massive drawing hand.
I love playing J10, if it's suited even better, but either way, it is a brilliant starting hand. If I am on the button, and it is a limp fest all the way around to me, I want to see J10 when I look down. Fuck AA in that position, I can push or raise big with AA, and then I will have 5 people who call and donk all over me. Who want's that shit? I much rather see J10 and shove, or make a small raise. J10 can cause a lot of damage if the flop falls in your favor. Especially if the flop falls with higher valued cards. Chances are there is someone in the hand with an A or a K, and a flop of Q,K,A would be a firework display. On the flip side, it is also very easy to get away from. If you don't have top pair, or a nice draw, muck it.
Today's Dish
5 Min Thai Noodles - my super fast go to dish when I feel like eating something spicy (all the time), and don't have many ingredients on hand. These Thai noodles are also excellent for those lazy weekend nights. Whip them up asap, pour a bottle of wine, and presto. This dish has a plethora of punch you in the face flavors; utilizing pungent garlic, green onions, soy sauce, and sesame seed oil. An Asian paradise that will tantalize your tastees.
Wait, how is 5 Min Thai Noodles and 'T.J. Hooker' the same thing?? Let me tell you...
- Like any Asian hooker, these noodles will love you long time.
- When you need something quick and simple to rely on, you can trust these noodles. Just like you can trust J10 to get you in the ring with the big boys.
- 5 min Thai noodles are spicyyyyyy, and will burn on the way out. Just like your opponents will burn on their way out of the poker room after you busted their top two pair of AK.
Recipe
- Cooked spaghetti noodles
- Sesame seed oil
- Garlic
- Red chili flakes
- Brown sugar
- Soy sauce
- Green onions (if you don't like onions, bean sprouts are a popular substitute)
- Roasted peanuts
- Lime
Pour a small amount of oil into the pan, and heat over med high. Add the garlic, and red chili flakes, and cook for 2-3 mins. Add the brown sugar, cook for 1 min, add the soy sauce, and cook for 2 mins, until the sauce thickens. Turn off the heat, let sauce cool slightly, toss in the noodles, and green onions. Mix well, the noodles and sauce will continue to cook in the residual heat. Transfer to bowl, top with crush peanuts, and a nice squirt of lime juice. Viola.
If anyone would like precise measurements, please don't hesitate to ask.

Dammit, there you go making me hungry before I go to bed again. This looks really good, I've got to get some sesame seed oil and try this out.

I do like the idea, but I think a better analogy would be to see the hands as an ingredient and playing them is the process of cooking.
A good cook can put together a decent meal out of canned food and leftovers (86o, 42s), while you can't help but cry when you see a new cook ruin an excellent steak (AA)
