Final Stages MTT

The late stage of a multi table tournament usually starts when the bubble boy gets born and you’re at the final table or tables, depending on the size of the tournament, in the money.

At this point it’s all about going further in the tournament so you can get more and more of the prize pool. You just need some patience since the short stacks and most of the average stacks will fall in line.

Short Stack Strategy

Playing a short stack at this time in the tournament is the easiest play you can make since you don’t have that many options, usually all-in or fold. The short stack is someone that has 10 or less big blinds and since the blinds get higher and higher you can a big amount of chips for your stack just by stealing the blinds with an all-in.

You can’t afford seeing flops so you should go for all-ins with any pocket pair or two face cards, this way you still have a chance of winning instead of just calling or getting eaten by the blinds and not hitting the flop.

Medium Stack Strategy

Playing an average stack in this late stage of the tournament can be pretty difficult since the huge blinds can put a lot of pressure on you and limit the moves you can make.

You should often try to steal blinds from players that can’t afford calling with anything, don’t be afraid of being aggressive sometimes but don’t do it with any cards since you can’t afford to be called without having nothing. Also, if you think that your hand is better feel free to call the all-ins from the short stacks because they will probably make desperate moves at this point and if you win you will have a nice rise in your chip count but if you lose you’re still in the game and as long as you have chips you can win.

Big Stack Strategy

If you have a big stack at this point you’re pretty fortunate since you can put a lot of pressure on most of the players by simply making a 2x rise since most of them will not be able to risk their stack just to protect the blinds. Your playing style should be pretty aggressive because the huge pressure of the blinds will be in your advantage. If you can take some risks you should play really aggressive, your options being either rise or fold till you take the chip lead and your place at the final table is pretty much secured.

If you’re not such a dare devil you should go for a more passive and safe style and let the other big stacks to make the dirty job for you and just wait because players will fall one after another.

Conclusion

At this point all you want to do is to last longer so make sure you take calculate risks but also remember that nothing is sealed and you shouldn’t be afraid of the huge blinds because you can always play them in your advantage no matter your chip count.
