A real life dummy actually served on the police force in San Francisco. San Francisco police officer Bob Geary had been taking his ventriloquist's dummy named "Brendan O'Smarty" along with him as he Patroled the streets of San Francisco for several years before the "powers that be" finally got wind of it. Needless to say, these once ignorant forces were not happy when this came to light.
Once Mr. Geary's partner was finally exposed as a dummy, the police force told officer Geary that he was no longer allowed to bring him along while he patrolled. Mr Geary was shocked, and so were some of the citizens of San Francisco. O'Smarty seemed to bring much more value to the San Francisco police department than most of the other officers on the force.
Officer Brendan O'Smarty provided entertainment for children, tourists, and other onlookers. He worked for much lower pay, in comparison to the other officers. He didn't descriminate or harass innocent citizens and he didn't eat nearly as many doughnuts as most of the other officers. This was clearly a case of descrimination.
Mr. Geary, along with the citizens of San Francisco were outraged. They fought this new rule, long and hard. They believed that removing the Dummy from the police force could have a detrimental effect on San Francisco. O'Smarty was a valuable asset to the police force, and if his assistance was lost, it could ruin San Francisco.
O'Smarty had been on several police chases. He had helped to pursue violent criminals, pedophiles, and rapists. He assisted in multiple arrests, searches, and all of those other things that police do. Removing him from the force would be a great injustice.
After $10,000 was spent by officer Geary to obtain the signatures needed, their fight finally paid off. Thanks to the dedication of officer Geary, and the citizens of San Francisco, a referendum was held over whether the dummy was allowed to patrol with officer Geary. The voting results were in favor of the dummy and he was allowed to continue to pursue his life long dream of becoming a real boy.
