Good cops, bad cops

in police •  6 years ago

Recently I have seen a number of posts referring to police in a negative way. When I was younger I had many run-ins with police. I was a kid and getting into mischief. I came close but avoided serious trouble. I didn't realize it at the time but I believe it was due in part to some understanding police officers.

Later I got to know some very good officers. To me they seem every bit as concerned about problem officers. I suppose it's because it reflects badly on them. The officers I know are good people, have families and the same problems as everyone else.

There are bad examples in just about every profession.

Most people only interact with police when they have broken the law. The next time you see a police officer try something positive like saying hi. Maybe go on a ride-along if your local police department offers that program.

Maybe more effort is needed to change the laws instead of attacking those who have to enforce them.

When you have a problem ask yourself, is it the police officer you have a problem with or the laws they are tasked with enforcing? If it's the former and you have not broken any laws or acted in a belligerent way towards the officer, call the non-emergency number for the police and explain the situation.

Prejudice is unacceptable in any form.
