"What started as a welfare check became a standoff with an increasingly agitated Chamberlain refusing to let the officers in - insisting he was okay."
The police have no legitimate authority to demand to enter a person's home unless they have reason to suspect a third party is at risk." There is no legitimate basis for forcing their way in to check on the welfare of a householder who is asking them to leave.
Police are not trained to do welfare checks, and it makes no sense to default to asking people to do complex tasks for which they have no training. The police are not a do-all catch-all organization, and we should neither ask them to be nor expect reliably good outcomes when ask that of them.
Police training in America appears to be dominated by a "take charge through aggression" mentality. It's doubtful whether that's effective in general (as opposed to teaching them to deescalate conflict), but it's absolutely the wrong approach when dealing with mental health issues.
Simply put, do not call the police to do a wellness check on someone unless you want that person dead, because you will be exacerbating that risk exponentially.
