From today's Chicago Sun-Times is this story of a man who lived comfortably to old age when he should have been in prison. Crime is out of hand in Chicago and has been for a while, but reform doesn't happen with blanket appeals to just obey the police nor the system that gives their violence cover through plausible deniability, when that very profession is where the mob, Nazis and klansmen, come together as one unified band of thieves in service to the greedy impulses of the wealthy, and empowered to rule over the lives of the rest of us. Hanhardt isn't an outlier; he is your average cop, imo.
"Hanhardt has been described as one of the most crooked cops in Chicago history, with federal prosecutors saying he ran a mob-tied, highly sophisticated theft ring that stole tens of millions of dollars worth of jewelry from salesmen across the country. He worked for the Chicago Police for 33 years, and is the highest-ranking former Chicago Police officer ever to be convicted of a crime. Federal prosecutors have said Hanhardt was long one of the Outfit’s (umbrella term for Chicago's mafia) men at the Chicago Police Department."

Just 33 years as a dual mobster/cop, ensuring the rights and safety of all of us.
