The objectives of many dictators and the objectives of the American President are diametrically opposite.
A short and vague response which the President of the United States gave to the question regarding the possible recognition of Russian claims on Crimea (which was annexed in March 2014) became a real political sensation long before the arranged meeting between Trump and Putin.
What did Trump mean when he said,
“We are going to have to see”?
Would the US make that radical step and recognize the annexation of the peninsula?
This statement has sparked heated debates in Russia, in the West, and, naturally, in Ukraine. However, they are pointless because Trump's words have nothing to do with the actual international policies of the United States. This is confirmed not only by the US diplomats but also a logical conclusion drawn from differences between Trump's statements and the subsequent developments.
An arguably successful businessman has never been, and probably never will become, even a merely successful politician. He remains a wealthy bourgeoisie, whom fate and perseverance have led to the White House. When Trump speaks on the matters of foreign policy, it does not mean that he understands these issues or that he has arrived at the final decision. Oftentimes, these answers are based on pure and uncontrolled emotions (or ignorance). It may also be explained by the fact that the American President seems to be chronically unable to get to the bottom of things: Trump is known for simply not being able to consistently study the complex issues of international law, the laws of the world economy, and so on.
It would be silly, to say the least, to expect miracles (positive or negative) from Trump. Would Trump like to “get along” with Putin? There is no doubt about that! There is no conspiracy in that either. Trump is just very fond of Putin because he would like to rule the US the same way Putin rules Russia. Trump is a politician that has nothing to do with democratic value, but he respects power. For him, Putin is a symbol of power that can't be limited by any political institutions.
Can Trump strike a deal with Putin? No, he can't because he is unable to satisfy Putin's demands. He can't transform an economically weak and politically obsolete country into a super-state. He can't stabilize the situation in Syria where Putin supports the notorious local leader both militarily and politically. He can't lift sanctions because of the “disobedient” Congress. He can't recognize the annexation of Crimea even if he wants to simply because he is too smart (sic) to commit a political suicide. He just wants to sign a joint declaration, just like he did with Kim Jong Un, to show the world that he knows the “art of the deal”. Putin will sign this declaration, just like Kim did. And then he will trick Trump, just like Kim will, because the objectives of dictators and the objectives of the American President are diametrically opposite.
