What exactly is happening at the border?

Recently President Trump has issued a proclamation that calls for the immediate mobilization and deployment of the National Guard to the U.S./Mexico border in order to curb gang violence and illegal immigration into the country. This will deploy a sizeable force to be permanently stationed to key points alongside the border.

Why is this being done?

The National Guard is being stationed due to Washington's belief in the idea that there is greater violence alongside the border (however, this is not the case according to FBI studies ). They hope by deploying the guard it will deter criminals from committing crimes in the first place while allowing for quicker and greater response to any situations that occur along these areas. Whether this will have such an effect depends on a certain amount of factors.

Possible consequences

Although a practical idea on paper, such actions may not have the desired effect that the president claims will occur. While acting as an effective crime deterrent, in the long run criminals could adapt to become smarter and more cunning than U.S. National Guard, leading to the need for an even greater and smarter response to it. Furthermore, this could illicit unpopular support by the American public, with many believing this to be an act of racism based on biased statistics. Do you believe this is the case, or merely a measure of national security trying to protect our borders?
