I'm not gonna cancel my Disney+ account over their firing of Gina Carano

Not sure if you heard this or noticed but the entertainment industry has a rather obvious bias against anyone or anything that is conservative. When Gina Carano made a few tweets that indicated that she definitely is politically conservative, Disney fired her from The Mandalorian after a cancel-culture something or other started on Twitter, which I do not use nor do I care about.

In response to the firing of Carano, conservative voices started a trending hashtag called "DumpDisney" and while I have no idea how many of these people actually did do so, or if it has any meaningful impact on Disney's bottom line I would imagine that it probably isn't going to gain them any new customers. There were a lot of people who came out of the woodwork to defend Gina, including Senator Ted Cruz who had this to say.

"Texan Gina Carano broke barriers in the Star Wars universe: not a princess, not a victim, not some emotionally tortured Jedi," he tweeted on Thursday. "She played a woman who kicked ass & who girls looked up to. She was instrumental in making Star Wars fun again. Of course Disney canceled her."

They are both Texans and both Conservative so it should come as no surprise that he did this. A number of other rather famous conservative voices jumped at the opportunity to showcase that they had cancelled their subscriptions to Disney+ as well

It seems as though the "fight fire with fire" ridiculousness of how everything has to be political is a war that is going to continue. A lot of people out there like to talk about how the USA political landscape is more polarized than ever but I don't really think that is the case. I think that social media is driving this nonsense, and people are becoming more tribal because of it. Disney cancels a conservative, conservatives cancel Disney, conservatives flock towards other services and in the meantime Pixar makes better stuff than than Disney does and also stay out of politics so we can all appreciate that.

I'm not going to cancel my Disney+ account because I never had one. Like a grown up, I got The Mandalorian from torrents and don't subscribe to any of the streaming services anyway. The only reason I have Netflix is because I am piggybacking on someone else's account and as long as he keeps paying the bill for that, I suppose I will switch that on from time-to-time.

In the meantime the political landscape of USA continues to be as absurd as ever and the "tit for tat" war that is going on is mostly relegated to the online community. The people who say and do awful things to one another online would not do so if they were face-to-face with said person - kind of like how it was back when I was in college and the internet was a relatively new thing. I had political differences with many of my friends, but it never got terribly toxic because we had to face the very real possibility that you might get punched in the face, or more likely, hurt the feelings of someone that you are intentionally hanging out with and probably have a lot in common with outside of your political ideals.

I think you are kinda missing the point here pal

Gina Carano will probably have difficulty getting work in acting from this point forward since liberals control basically all of the entertainment industry. I didn't care much for her character in The Mandalorian anyway so I can't say that she was really headed towards stardom even without being cancelled. She was an extremely minor character on the show and since we don't know anything about season 2 yet, we don't even know if she was meant to be in it anyway.

The annoying part of all of this is that since she is in the spotlight now, I can all but guarantee that she attempts to pursue a "career" in being a political pundit of some sort - because we don't have near enough of those already.

Since we have torrents, I don't see why anybody would pay for something like Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Literally all of that content is available for free, without ads, almost immediately after they post them... and you're not supporting the Beast

I can't say I disagree with anything you just said there :)

ha! nice twist at the end there. I have seen how some conservative media out there saying that Disney is cancelling all political contributions that opposed the certification of Biden as president. My thought was WTF is Disney making political contributions for in the first place?

I don't have Disney+, but had been considering a subscription. No more.
The thing is, I would feel the same if they had fired someone else for political opinions of the "opposite" sort. If they are going to be firing over opinions, I don't want to support them.
Politics makes people-- and corporations-- stupid.

yeah, I agree. The cancel culture thing shouldn't be celebrated no matter who it is applied to unless they did something really awful and / or illegal.

I am surprised that companies still get involved in political side of things these days since there has been pretty terrible financial consequences for those that do so on both sides of the fence.

I thought it was shitty what they did to her and I would definitely ditch my subscription if I had one but I was never going to sign up for that crap anyway. Other than the Mandalorian what is on there other than that anyway? Disney is already hemorrhaging money due to their parks being closed, it seems as though they would be smarter about this. Perhaps they are hoping that the cancel culture people who pressured them into this in the first place are going to sign up? I wouldn't count on that happening.
