What do you call a temporary policy that never ends? Permanent. According to this President, the definition of temporary is pretty clear...
I don't often share on Steemit my views regarding politics, but for those that know me understand what side of the fence I stand. As a "Nation of Immigrants", the United States of America embraces people from all over the globe. Like all countries on this big beautiful planet of ours, we ask one very tiny request to all visitors...Please Sign In.
I am third generation native born and my ancestors came here in 1908 aboard a steamship. They were stuffed in a cargo hold because peasants were not allowed on deck. They came from a small Ukrainian village and were fleeing Bolshevik persecution. As German Catholics, their customs and beliefs did not align with Soviet cleansing.
They came with very little possessions and even less money. They knew this was the last time they would ever see their homes again. They brought the entire village with no promise of entry into the United States. Only hope and fear filled their minds and faith in their hearts. Weeks at sea for men, women, and children who had never seen the ocean, let alone been on a ship. I cannot image the tears of joy and uncertainty when they saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time.
They spent several weeks in a place called Ellis Island, a grand and majestic symbol of the riches to be found in The New World.
The bureaucracy they faced was overwhelming as they did not speak English. The immigration officers were more akin to cattle drovers than they were helpful. Vaccinations, medical tests, and quarantine were the normal obstacles they faced as they were shuffled through line after line.
Finally! They were American citizens...well...not so fast...Please have a little look at the Naturalization Act of 1906 courtesy of Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalization_Act_of_1906
After all the trials and tribulations of fleeing tyranny, sailing the ocean blue, processing though the stock yards of Ellis Island, and a long journey overland, they arrived at the most inviting and livable spot in all of the great USofA...North Dakota. Really? WTF?
So yeah, I think you had plenty of time to realize your dreams of becoming a citizen during the TEMPORARY period. All good things must come to an end, right?
"one very tiny request". It's expensive, takes months, even years to be accepted, and many Americans cannot even pass their own citizenship test. Our current system is an embarrassment, and it should be simpler and easier. Your family didn't need a passport in 1908, they didn't need to pass a citizenship test as foolish as it is now.
Also take note, DACA applies to mostly people who were children and if you haven't noticed, teaching law isn't a priority in American public schools. "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" that is what they say and yet won't actually make it mandatory, of course it would mean an informed populace to realize how truly regressive with immigration we are becoming (as one example).
