In todays rant, I discuss two more common talking points that are stupid arguments; one on raw milk and the other concerning home schooling. Hopefully you enjoyed the first half of this rant, I know I did! If you haven't watched yet you can check it out here.
Here in Canada, it is still illegal to sell raw milk in 2018. The fact that raw milk is illegal is such a joke and the only justification anyone can seem to make for the restriction is that it could cause illness due to bacteria or some such non-sense.
The people who peddle this talking point have, obviously, never heard that there are raw milk vending machines all over Europe. There are over 1000 in Italy alone. Where are the dead bodies and the thousands upon thousands of people puking their guts out from this supposed health hazard?
SourceNot only that but even if there was more risk from raw milk than pasteurized, which there isn't, are we not grown adults? If we, as a society, are responsible enough to buy raw beef, pork, chicken, and eggs with the understanding that we are required to prepare it in such a way that prevents illness then why can't we be trusted with raw milk?
The second point I talk about is the most common anti-homeschooling argument: Aren't you worried your kids won't be properly socialized? Socialized? Are we talking about kids or dog training? If this is the strongest anti-homeschooling argument you can come up with, your position is incredibly weak.
What type of socialization do children actually get in public education? Do they learn how to intelligently communicate with one another and treat each other with respect and compassion? Not likely. Even the mainstream media reports on the ongoing issue of bullying which highlights how they're actually learning to treat both themselves and others with disrespect.
Source / These home schooled children couldn't possibly be getting properly socialized...Boys get to the top of the public school food chain picking on other children, and by being members of gangs or cliques. Girls learn to get attention by wearing revealing clothing and acting catty to one another. None of this behavior is advantageous in the real world. Is this really the type of socialization you want for your children?
I could delve further into both of these topics but for these particular rants I just want to focus on these key arguments I commonly hear. In the future, I will likely rant about both of these topics in greater depth.

I couldn't agree more with this rant. In addition to the milk rant, the lesser processed homogenized, higher fat content milk is MORE expensive than the high lactose, more processed, skim milk. You'd think it'd be the other way around considering the lower fat milk is "better for you". /: (Lies, I tell you!)
As for homeschooling, I always learned more at home than at school. I wish I had never been subjected to the over-glorified baby-sitting institution that was public school. Sure, I made some great friends when I was a kid--but most of them I can't tolerate as an adult, and my adult friends are so much more valuable to me emotionally and spiritually. Not only that, but the friends I did make did NOT outweigh the after affects of the bullying or the extreme boredom I faced. Suicidal thoughts, apathy, lethargy, extreme emotional distress, obesity, etc, are all things I face now as a direct result of having gone through public school.
Thing things I learned a home have had a much greater impact on my life. Love, caring, cooking, science, nature, curiosity (that's the biggest one). My Oma taught me to read before I was in kindergarten. My father taught me my love of science and astronomy. I grew up watching Cosmos with Carl Sagan. My mother taught me about gardening, nature, cooking, and art. Both my grandfathers taught me about carpentry (at least Opa did what he could before he passed away when I was young).
I can't stress enough how bad the public school education system is in Canada--and know that it's worse just about everywhere else int he world makes me very concerned for the future of our species.

I really don’t understand that argument either about socializing “That’s so cool that you homeschool IF can still provide the socialization. Society is so quick and loud to impose made up things to be in perpetual fear of. Luckily our family knows & respects that we are the way we are :) but I know what you said in the previous post about not wanting to alienate people with our beliefs ~ I typically just amount it all to “live & let live” and just keep on staying true to ourselves & our beliefs.

Last year at the farmer's market in Cherryville, BC I made contact with a person (hush, hush) who could score me some raw milk. She worked in town and told me when I could come and get it. First, I had to provide a clean, gallon pickle jar, which I gave her the next day. A couple days later she called and told me to come get it. When I got to the store where she worked I had to wait until all the customers had gone. I went in, she went in the back and came out with the milk hidden in a brown, paper bag. No chatting. I gave her the money and split. It went down like a drug deal.
It's fucking milk, for crying out loud!
Without further incriminating myself, I have to confess: I've also occasionally bought meat from my neighbor without having it federally inspected as is the law in BC. I know, I know. These animals are grass fed. They don't get their daily dose of antibiotics and growth hormones or stand knee deep in their own shit. Yes, I realize that my life is in jeopardy by consuming meat that has been neglected like this, but I was desperate. I can't afford meat from the grocery store. And I could get this admittedly dangerous (yet delicious) meat from my neighbor for half the going price. I'm sorry. Please don't turn me in to the Mounties.
Oh. By the way. When the school system says "socialized" they mean "programmed."

Sorry, I don't think I have time to do transcripts or closed captioning. I'm a pretty busy guy lately and have only been getting 4-6 hours of sleep most nights. It is something I will remember for the future though.

Been there, done that. Just realize that this is the toughest time in your life, but it'll be over in the blink of an eye. Your twins will be driving soon and not long after you'll be a grandpa. In many ways, life really does begin at 40. But don't forget to enjoy these busy times too. Smell those roses because they'll soon be rose hips. :) Then it's tea time!

Ahhh, you've got an agreeable follower here. Ok the pic of the kids on the apples is too cute. When I see my 8yo playing legos and losing himself in his imagination I think, wow. If he had been in public school this whole time I'm sure that would be bullied out of him. It is so sad... and that is just one detriment of public school...
A friend's son literally stopped eating his favorite foods - yogurt and hummus- because he was made fun of for eating those foods at school lunch.
If this is not an example of a major problem that just goes ignored, than I don't know what is!

That's horrible that your friend's son was affected enough to stop eating his favorite foods. That is exactly the type of thing I am talking about. So many young people are negatively affected by the other children's anti-social behavior but it i the homeschoolers that need socialization? That's rich.

Couldn't agree more, we should have a renegade get together in Edmonton, try to track down as many steemers as possible, one day :)
My family drinks raw milk, fermented raw milk (kefir and cheese), raw fermented butter, etc, everyday. We don't get sick, to the contrary, we are very healthy. People we know that live on dead, deficient dairy, yep they get sick.
I couldn't find better words to describe the ill effects of our public fool-system. Thanks for the intellectual stimulation, it is hard to find these days :)

It's so refreshing to see how many people are awake to the benefits of raw milk. I agree. It definitely tastes better. And the health benefits are obvious.
A few years ago my 2yo contracted measles but was over it in just a few days. My Dr at the time was from Switzerland and a big raw milk supporter. He wasn't surprised at how quickly we got through it. Grass-fed raw & fermented dairy is much higher in nutrients and more readily absorbed (specifically Vitamin A) and these nutritional stores are what he believed helped him get over it quicker.
As for @wwf's meetup, I wish we were closer, but we're in N. Idaho. Nine hours is just too far for a road trip with 4 kids right now. I recently started following you both and have really enjoyed the posts thus far. Both your families are definitely the type of Steemians that @guntotnhippie (my hubby) and I could get along with!
