Racist, Sexist Anti-Gay? - The Red Pill Film Review

Unless you've been hiding under a rock recently, you've probably heard of "The Red Pill" documentary film. I finally got around to watching the controversial documentary and wanted to share my thoughts.

For the uninitiated, the idea behind The Red Pill is reasonably straightforward. A feminist explores the mens rights movement ("MRM") and documents her experiences and thoughts along the way. Award winning film maker Cassie Jaye had previously worked on similar subjects but apparently wasn't expecting such a turbulent film-making process from conception to shooting, fund-raising, and promotion.

Being a card carrying feminist, Cassie (pictured below) expects the worst from the start, and this is compounded by media reports of MRAs being misogynists, trolls and racists. As she conducts interviews with MRAs (Mens Rights Activists) Cassie finds herself questioning her own beliefs and opinions. The MRAs make some compelling arguments and her increasingly conflicted mindset is palpable. So Cassie interviews some feminists and therein lie the foundations of the movie; Both a personal journey for Cassie, and a reasonably balanced bit of soap-boxing for both sides of the argument.

The story of the films conception (and reception) is as interesting as the documentary itself, if not more so. After filming, Cassie was relying on a Kickstarter campaign to fund post production and promotion. When certain feminists got wind of Cassies lack of feminist bias, much of the funding was withdrawn. It was dead in the water until conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos asked fans to support the film, which they did, in their droves.

Protests at screenings only served to stir up hype, and The Red Pill is now one of the most successful documentaries of our time. It's currently available for streaming or download from all major media outlets, except Netflix, for some reason.

Whether you're a feminist or not, I think the film is worth a watch. I don't have a dog in that race (I'm a moderate liberal, egalitarian & free-speech-advocate, if you must know).. but found it very interesting to watch, if a little slow. Certainly, from my perspective, I felt the MRAs and feminists were both given plenty of time to get their views across, and it's a shame so many (of the more radical?) feminists out there feel the need to protest and censor a film that's nothing more than a handful of interviews and some of Cassies somewhat wishy-washy observations.

I was disappointed that the controversy surrounding the films funding wasn't covered. I expected they might shoe-horn it in at the end, but they wrapped it up with some fairly predicable musings from Cassie. Regardless, as a thought provoking documentary with some powerful interviews, and very relevant, contemporary subject matter, I'd gladly recommend this film.

Interesting review. Maybe I'll give it a watch, if nothing else because those people were literally being fascist trying to shut down free speech and preventing other people from being able to express their views. Its sad that they do things like that :(

So yeah I'll find a copy and watch it with my S/O to see what we think about it.

sound's quite nice from your post wonderful :)

Little behind on commenting (especially against the one that took 20 seconds) but figured I wold add in my two cents.

I haven't seen the film and don't really have a large intention to do so, I mean out of personal entertainment I do not have an urge to watch it. There are issues in this world that I am way more passionate about over how people pose their stance on modern equality in the first world countries. I mean in regards to other contemporary issues, this one is pretty much an argument of entitlement, especially from the more extreme (on both sides).

Will humans ever be 100% equal, I don't think so but I also know that society isn't just one way on this, that there are problems for everyone (regardless of gender, orientation, genealogy, wealth, etc).

That is a brief, and possible bad, representation of my view. I just don't believe that you can sit down and fix all of your problems in life by changing small details like that because the problems, in most first world countries, are not as simple as saying "You are of African decent so you will live in the crappiest place and have a bad life." and by confronting issues as if they are that simple, you... I am digressing, there are some problems that are that simple but its not like how many (again on both sides) say it is.

I have watched the doccumentary and it was really funny to see the reporter chick getting confused and slowly realising that she has been fed a complete lie, a mainstream narrative, that women are opressed and men are the opressors.

I believe anyone who has been paying close attention to the development of PC culture and impairement of free speech should give this doccumentary a watch, ASAP.
It actually brings forth a very compelling point: men are actually systematically more opressed than women especially when it comes to marriage and the rights to having a place in the kid's life. It's seriously sad.... Nobody is giving the MRA movement any attention, instead they're bashed with labels such as "mysoginists" or "fascists" . The situation is truly ironic.

I guess I've been living under a rock, because I've never heard of it, but it does sound interesting. I'm pretty behind on the documentaries. I just watched "Going Clear" for the first time a few months ago. This one sounds like it's worth a watch.

still not seen but seems like weekend will be awesome after watching this one :D

Mr. You have presented your work in a very nice way. Thank you very much for your work. I am very respectful of your work.

You are the fastest reader and typist on Steemit. Took you 20 seconds to read that whole article, then comment. I'm impressed.

I actually hadn't heard of it but that sounds like an interesting watch. It sounds like a recipe for controversy too, especially involving Milo it sounds bound to turn a few heads (for better or worse). I'll add that to my list now.

I haven't seen The Red Pill yet, After reading your review I gonna see it soon. :)
