A cafe in Melbourne Australia charges an 18% premium for all men who shop there. This tax they say is "optional" and is put in place because of the perceived pay gap between men and women. What does Steemit think of this kind of economic feminism?
As far as I can see, these feminists are using the mechanisms of the market to right perceived social wrongs.

I can imagine being a guy in this cafe would go something like this.

haha yes, it would be very awkward to turn down the 'voluntary' tax, especially if you are surrounded by women

So, on the one hand I like that they're trying to raise awareness, but on the other hand, I think it would add fuel to the "feminists go overboard" fire. What saves them from this, though, is that it's voluntary, so as long as they make sure to keep reiterating the 'voluntary' part, then heck yeah, keep it up!

I believe that people should not be charged extra for their gender. As such, I would refuse to pay such a tax.

I guess taxation is a government regulation but not a local cafe initiative. I assume it's under law

Hmm If it's anything like in the UK (governed under EU laws and directives) then she might be liable to be sued for #sexual discrimination if the price differences are not 'voluntary' within her store.
From what I understand, lending the UK as an example, gender discrimination can be permitted, but only in exceptional and specific situations such as #RapeCrisis centres and female domestic violence shelters...which on a long shot, guessing that her cafe probably doesn't count as ;)
Acropss the past several years in the UK for example, all the early 2000s
'girls get free entry but boys have to pay full price into clubs and bars promotions'
have been banned after court challenges for gender discrimination against boys.
It'd be interesting though to see what happens here in Australia to this radical feminist businesswoman....the free market will probably decide :)

Wage gap is a myth and has been debunked. Feminism is not about equality, its about Superiority. Women have more Rights over Men.. Period.

The gender pay gap is the myth that just won't die. It fails to make the basic distinction between earnings and wages.
But whatever, if it's voluntary, I guess guys can go there in order to win brownie points with women who like to believe they are victim of the big bad evil patriarchy.

Great idea :) And I think to make it even more fair, that kind of cafe will need to make 18% bigger burgers for those guys who pay 18% more!

I have nothing against the feminist movement, well a long as its got nothing to do with Valerie Solanas's idea of feminism but is making men pay more a cup of coffee or a pastry really the right way to go about it?

Disgraceful! The is no gender pay gap it is a pure myth. Feminism has nothing left to fight for unless you count the millions of mistreated women in the Arab states that western feminists forget about.

Way to cut your customer base.
The only men that will go there now are those that don't know any better and those that hate themselves so much that they need to virtue signal.
Fighting percieved sexism with actual sexism. How pathetic.

I definitely can't see how this tax is making sense, I would boycott that cafe.

Voluntary being the key word. If not, I could see an organized backlash, or one can simply boycott the business or avoid it altogether in response to it's policy. Being a private enterprise, they are free to enact whatever business policies they support, however, the political and social message also carries appropriate blowback.
