A new article on a plan by Tim Draper (investor in Tezos) to split California up into three states. What are the thoughts on this idea? Is it beneficial to have even more states? On the one hand it would be interesting because of how it could effect the voting and congress but on the other what reasons exist to break up an economy as large as California?
“The citizens of the whole state would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities and towns,” Draper wrote in the proposed measure’s statement of findings.
My own thoughts are there is a stunning lack of case studies showing what happens when large states are split up. Do we even have an idea of what the consequences might be based on data?

If the case is there: split it within the state into some other unit. Maybe "region" or something - the nomeclature doesn't matter. Then, let each of the three units bid for statehood individually.

That never occurred to me, but it makes sense. They could make four states out of Texas too.
