Interesting question that came in from the audience, my sense is there are people on Steemit who have some good answers here. Check out the clip and leave your thoughts in a reply!

Yes, I like the assessment of smart people. It is easy to detect people that are not smart but truly smart people fly under the radar.

What is smart? I was married to a man who had a PhD in Chemistry. I’m sure he’s a brilliant scientist, but he was so dumb at so many other things!

Truth is, most people are smart at something. They might be incredible chefs, brilliant mathematicians, or whatever...

So true.

"Truth is, most people are smart at something."

I believe Einstein said that: 'Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid.'

Like trying to wear glasses when you don't need them!

They use a middle initial! Seriously, as @davidpakman noted , smart people tend to ask more questions, but related to that is that they listen to others. Something I need to practice more often. Also they don't degrade or make someone look dumb or inferior in front of others.

You are absolutely right @armentor

Someone says smart if it has a high IQ

They have the ability to walk you through things step by step, without requiring great leaps. They spend a lot of time reading. Intelligent people normally get excited when you ask them why or how, whereas mimics normally get frustrated. :)

You can generally tell by the way people (1.) carry themselves and (2.) speak to others

You can be smart in one area and dumb in another. Fast learners or open minded people are the ones making more questions, but that does not make them smarter.

I really agree with what has been written

People who are intelligent come in all different types. The common thread among them in my opinion is inquisitiveness. The people who look you in the eye and try to frame a question specifically for the person in front of them is top notch intelligent. The type of intelligence that I am referring to is the premier variety because it combines all factors of intelligence.

The best way to distinguish the intelligence of someone is to be totally present and fully grasp the information being sent by that person. Being judgemental disqualifies a person from being a serious judge is another persons intellect.

"People who are intelligent come in all different types."

I'm an electric type.

That’s very electrifying to know.

I hope that doesn't come as a shock.

i agree with you @davidpakman

I believe that a person being smart is quite different from being intelligent.Smart has to do with being enlightened in most,if not all, affairs patterning to life,so a smart person can be detected through the way he/she tackles problems and proffer solutions to them too

How you dress usually gives people an opinion about how smart you are before people even talk to you, so, there's that lol

Very true in most cases. I presume that you are referring to the ‘dress for success’ trope. It is also interesting to factor in the fact that so many of the super intelligent people dress in a very eccentric fashion.

I guess maybe people figure if you can get away with dressing like that, you must be a genius lol

Smart people are just people capable of besting their own cognitive biases.

If intelligence were simply a matter of knowing things you could talk about at a cocktail party, well then intelligence would largely be reserved for the upper classes who have greater access to information... which is simply not true.

Case and point ^

"Smart people are just people capable of besting their own cognitive biases."

That's only one specific kind of intelligence. A computer has no self awareness, but mathematically it's capable of far greater feats of calculation than anyman.

You can't properly apply the knowledge you collect if you are subject to cognitive biases. The application of knowledge is the more important part of the equation. You can know a limited number of things but apply that knowledge very effectively and be much more valued for intelligence (example being some artists etc.) or you can have this vast library of information on tax policy and information as to it's ramifications and still believe in trickle down.

Also, a computer being smarter than us because it has no self-awareness actually further proves my point... it has no cognitive biases to overcome.

I can say that looks cannot define if the person is smart. You can tell it by talking to him/her while looking in his eyes. Eyes can define if a person is lying to his/her words or not 😁

The person who watches the night is the most intelligent

look her eyes and said that you are so preety

A person who can talk and manage a situation instantly called smartness.

follow back please

Phrenology's a good way to tell if someone's smart.

Wow. Are these things that Dave just picked up on his own? Because I happen to know that like every metric he used here is something that I've seen professional psychologists and philosophers define as ways to determine people's intelligence.

Like, a string of very popular qualifiers that I've read articles about.

Yes, those are all very good ways to find out if someone's smart. I'm not sure I could add anything to this.

I actually think in a social situation that most smart people would really be there with purpose and when I say with purpose I mean they would be there just for the purpose of the event and socializing so I do agree with you when you say most intellectual people will ask questions because they won't feel they have something to prove by just speaking out of turn basically when people speak out of turn these are the more attention-seeking people who in my opinion just actually want to be visible in a crowd. To be visible in a crowd means absolutely nothing especially when you're bragging about all of your credentials but your numbers are not adding up if you were really as smart as some people portrayed their self to be than their life would reflect their intelligence. Really intellectual people's accomplishments will speak for themselves and people will tend to want to ask them their opinion on subjects as opposed to them just imposing their opinion on a multitude of subjects that they know nothing about.

I agree that it's often in what people don't say than what they say.

Having common sense and learning from your mistakes is way more important than just being smart. I think smart people are overrated in this country. I mean no one KNOWS everything. we all have our flaws.
