The real post-pandemic danger is from politicians, already with massive bureaucracies at their disposal, who will claim that having saved us from certain death we need to apply their insights and the resources of government to what else ails us.
We should take some lessons from the viral pandemic, if not the ones our pols would like, and note how an $8 billion per year CDC budget proved insufficient incentive for that agency to do its most fundamental and basic job. For whatever else it was working on, it wasn't working with any urgency at all upon test kits for the newly discovered Wuhan Flu, and then proceeded to send out flawed and contaminated test kits when it did produce one. By the time that incompetence was rectified, it was too late and a US epidemic inevitable.
We should not forget either the responses of state governors, who closed down their state's economies based upon even then obviously hare-brained thinking, closing golf courses and banning motor boating just to cite a couple of their lesser panic-driven and panic-causing responses, nor the fact that the only reason hospitals faced being overwhelmed was the existing state structures they and their states have crafted so as to limit their facilities and numbers of personnel. We faced a bed and doctor/nurse shortage because we designed hospitals to have a bed and doctor/nurse shortage as a matter of public policy.
Within a more serious age the governor of NY would be turfed from office for his COVID-19 response, where he garnered a daytime Emmy from an unquestioning media, instead of being discarded under charges of sexual harassment. The governor of Michigan should be tossed out for banning everything within her sight, including golf and motor boating to name two of the lesser diktats issued, before she can make real her plan to make the environment less safe and energy less available with her pipeline ban and other Luddite policies. These aren't heroes, but people in over their heads unwilling to hear anything different to their preconceived notions upon the size and role of governments.
Always have and always will.
