Uganda: REFUGEE HOST By Necessity? Humanitarianism In A Troubled Neighborhood

in politics •  6 years ago

From the Ugandan capital Kampala, Josh Friedman poses the question: Is Uganda hosting more than 1 million refugees out of necessity? While the Ugandan government and its essentially president-for-life Yoweri Museveni often face criticism for alleged human rights abuses and restrictive social policies, they simultaneously receive a great deal of praise from the international community for hosting so many refugees. According to 2017 statistics linked below, Uganda hosts more refugees than every country in the world except Turkey and Pakistan. Which states are responsible for Uganda's large refugee population and what are some of the conflicts past and present in Uganda's neighborhood that trigger these refugee flows?
