The debate on Tuesday, Sept 10, make me less worried about the Presidential Election in the United States. My reaching out to the local chapter of the Socialist Rifle Association and, successful, efforts to get my Technician class amateur radio license could seem like I was overreacting. I may just be remembering the past.
I remember 2016, when I and many others were sure that Trump was a fringe candidate. I remember January 6, 2021, when Trump's reactionaries stormed the Capitol in a "Trailer Park Pustch".
I see efforts to manipulate the upcoming election now. In the next few weeks, I expect to see efforts to suppress the votes of minorities, women, younger voters and urban voters. If the votes cannot be suppressed, the next tactic may be to delay the count and throw the election to the United States House or to the Supreme Court.
Finally, MAGA aren't going away any time soon. Trump has empowered millions of lower-middle to lower-class, less educated, rural voters who see their numeric majority declining. It may be possible to educate some of them so they will start voting for their economic interests, but many may be too far gone.
Activists resting after Obama's election may have helped pave the way for Trump, we can't afford to let our guard down this time.
