I think Brexit portrays this particular paradox very well. Whilst politicians extol "the will of the people" as being sacrosanct, and they will leave the EU with no compromise against their better judgement BECAUSE of the vote, nevertheless Brexit has also given free rein to a very small right-wing segment of Parliament, allowing them to act as dictators. In this way, the public views on so many issues - austerity, the environment, immigration - will be completely overlooked. Furthermore, the public will not be allowed to make a judgment through vote on the final outcome - democracy has become a sick joke to be manipulated.

Don't mix things. It is not the same the vote of a sovereign country like Great Britain to belong to a supranational entity than a few Spaniards trying to steal the land of all Spaniards.
I'm an anti-European Union in its current form and I agree 100% with them and the Brexit because the European Union is really a sick joke of democracy, in that I agree with you. But it is also a sick joke of democracy what the fascist and secessionist politicians are doing to the region of Catalonia.
