With the kind of society we are in today, insecurity is a real issue that everybody, both civilians, uniformed and non-uniformed must be so concerned about. However, since security is more of a social matter than a professional undertaking, several factors play in ensuring sufficient security in any society.
I don't know about the other continents but I am sure I know about Africa and I can very well relate to the various issue that make insecurity a subject that may take much longer time to handle.
Any Entrepreneur, any business student and every other person with intelligent mind knows that success of any initiative lies on the foundation on which the system is based. And picking from this que, African officers charged with the protection of human lives do not have the best of foundations.
Since the men in uniformed are burdened with the biggest responsibility of protecting and taking care of the precious human lives, sometimes their responsibility involves sacrificing their own lives for the those they protect and as such no task could be bigger than this.
However much these burden may be falling on the shoulders of these officers, many nations in Africa have not stopped to ask more about these individuals. We have never been concerned about their lives, their struggles, their comfort and discomforts. All we see is the shallow appreciations and deep complaints whenever things go wrong and they don't give the desired results to an extent that we forgetting they are just but human.
If complains were to be stopped and a path towards more appreciation was to be set, I would advocate for a serious re-look at the social foundation of the police departments. As I have mentioned that the role is more of a social engagement than a career, living conditions of these officers should be prioritized.
The case of pathetic living conditions has been a widely talked topics and now many people are agreeing withe the argument that officers need to be accorded better living conditions and better infrastructures much than the dilapidated mad and tin houses they currently reside under. The wages and allowances must also be looked into to ensure that the officers feel very motivated and willing to d their best whenever called upon.
More over, due to the developing concerns on officers going rogues and shooting fellow officers in the camps makes the aspect counselling necessary. Emphasis on therapeutic important must be made clear and should be incorporated into the military department to help them deal with the horrible scenes they have to endure each time they embark on saving the lives of their citizens.
